The “How To’s” of hair in your 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and beyond!

Rules to follow in your 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and beyond!

In your 30’s- USE CONDITIONER EVERY TIME YOU SHAMPOO

Nearly 30% of women skip conditioner. In your teens, when the scalp produces a lot of oil, this works, but at this age a quick sudsing just won’t cut it anymore. In your 30’s, oil production on your scalp drops sharply. The less oil your scalp produces, the more fragile your hair becomes. Why? Coloring, heat styling, and general wear and tear leave holes in the surface of the hair, and your hair becomes weaker, less elastic, and more vulnerable to breakage. Conditioner is an excellent substitute for sealing the hair and adding shine. We recommend following every shampoo with conditioner, and for extra insurance an at home mask once a week.

In your 40’s- EASE UP ON YOUR HAIR

During this decade, your hormones can throw you a curveball. Hair texture often changes in your forties, becoming wavier, coarser, and curlier. Pregnancy and other hormonal shifts can also cause thinning. Treat those thinning tresses with kid gloves. If your hair is wavier than it use to be, play this up with a texturizing spray like Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray. If it is straighter, a good line of thickening products including shampoo, conditioner, and mousse or a dry spray will add fullness and texture. If your hair is coarser than it used to be, a protecting blow dry cream will smooth it and make your morning routine faster. Finally, if your hair is thinning, try a shampoo or serum with thickening properties. We like Bumble and Bumble Thickening Serum.

In your 50’s- REVIVE FADING BROWS

If your brows have become white or gray they are less apparent, and this can throw off the proportions of your face. Your brows look best when they’re a shade darker than your hair color. Another option is to get your brows tinted at a salon (this frees you from having to fill them in every morning.) Tinting typically last three to four weeks, even with twice a day face washing.

In your 60’s- LET YOUR HAIR GROW

It’s nonsense to think you’re too old to wear your hair long. You can subtract years by keeping your hair at a collarbone length or longer. If your hair is thinning, don’t go too long or you may sacrifice body. One tip is to use layers, bangs or both to soften and frame around your face.
